Hello!
I'm Vanessa. I am an American speech-language pathologist (SLP) working in Valencia, Spain. I have a small private practice specializing in supporting individuals with communication challenges. I work with a wide clinical range of speech and language issues and across the age span, with involvement of the English language being the factor my clients all have in common. English may be one of the [many] languages they use at home, the language of instruction in school, and is most often a beneficial context within which we do our therapeutic work.
About me...
As a pre-med student at Texas A&M, I was still craving to study languages, literature and linguistics. In one of these courses completely unrelated to my degree, the instructor mentioned that she was a speech-language pathologist, shared a few sentences about her work, and that was it. My new path was set. Later, while choosing a program for my Master's to become an SLP, the Bilingual/Multicultural Specialization offered at the University of Texas seemed to be the perfect way to blend together so many of my passions. I started my career in the Houston-area Spring Independent School District, working exclusively in Spanish with students with communication impairments, enrolled in bilingual education programs. I loved this work, but adventure called our family abroad. I became a 'travelling spouse', touting my household and young children across Europe, changing homes and languages multiple times a year, until we finally put down roots in Singapore. My children spent their childhood there and I enjoyed nearly 7 years of amazing professional growth, thanks to the opportunities in Rainbow Centre, a social service agency supporting individuals with disabilities, where I served as SLP, Head of Department and Head of Clinical Services. Once again, change was our constant, and we made the move to our permanent home in Valencia. I spent our first years here working as Nursery teacher in Cambridge House Community College (its former name)-- an invaluable experience that has forever changed the way I approach play-based therapy. Now, as a private practitioner, each of my personal and professional experiences along the way come together to shape how I assess and treat the communication needs of each client and family.
